Playful Reappropriation
exhibition MILan Design Week 2024
Exhibited in the art space and former printing factory, Gallery Assab One, Studio Booboon presented its first collection of furniture and lighting, in a self-curated exhibition titled ‘Playful Reappropriation’ during Milan Design Week 2024. With four new projects produced and manufactured by both the studio and in collaboration with manufacturers the exhibition represents the studio’s unique design approach.
The concept of reappropriation refers to the act of taking a fragment or element from its original context and giving it new meaning or significance within a different setting. As part of the studio’s creative process, where familiar or traditional cultural elements are reimagined. Through this lens of reappropriation, the studio explores the transformative power of blending diverse cultural influences and traditions, ultimately resulting in a rich tapestry of creativity and innovation.
This approach is evident throughout the exhibition, such as the Rabbit collection’s graphical elements, the Jogak light sculptures that incorporate traditional fabric processes into modern functionality, and the Gan stools that embody Korean artistic philosophy of negative space. Through this unique lens, the studio showcases a harmonious fusion of Korean, Japanese, and European cultures, traditions, and processes in their innovative and captivating works. The space consisting of fabrics and sustainably sourced oak is designed to be easily adjustable, and transportable, allowing for the exhibition components to be reused.
